What’s CCT vs CRI? Don’t Mix Up These Two Key Lighting Parameters

When you send RFQs for commercial LED lighting projects, you may often see CCT and CRI listed on product spec sheets. Many new buyers mix these two lighting parameters up. Wrong specifications will lead to incorrect samples, rejected shipments and unsatisfied end users. These two metrics work together but measure totally different lighting features.

What is CCT (Correlated Color Temperature)

CCT, short for Correlated Color Temperature, describes the warmth or coolness of the light emitted by an LED source. It is measured in Kelvin (K).

CCT only tells you the tone of the light, not how accurately the light shows real colors of objects.

  • 2700K–3000K: Warm white, yellowish light. Widely used for hotels, restaurants and residential spaces to create a cozy atmosphere.
  • 3500K–4000K: Neutral white, balanced tone. Popular for retail shops, offices and showrooms.
  • 5000K–6500K: Cool white, bluish bright light. Suitable for warehouses, workshops and parking lots.

What is CRI (Color Rendering Index)

CRI stands for Color Rendering Index. It ranges from 0 to 100. This value shows how well a light source can reproduce the true color of objects compared with natural daylight.

A high CRI light makes fabrics, food, artwork and merchandise look natural and vivid. A low CRI source distorts colors, even if the Kelvin value looks right.

  • CRI >90: High color rendering. Required for clothing stores, galleries, supermarkets and cosmetic displays.
  • CRI 80–89: Standard level, acceptable for most office and general commercial use.
  • CRI <80: Low rendering quality, mostly used for basic illumination such as storage areas where color accuracy is not important.

Real Project Application Examples

1.Clothing retail store: 4000K CCT + CRI>90 Neutral light helps customers judge garment colors correctly. Poor CRI here will cause return issues after customers take clothes home.

2.Warehouse and logistics area: 5000K CCT + CRI>80 Bright cool light improves visibility for picking goods. Color rendering is not the top priority.

3.Fine dining restaurant: 3000K CCT + CRI>90 Warm light builds a comfortable dining mood while keeping food colors appetizing.

Common Mistakes Buyers Make

  • Thinking high CRI means warm light. CRI has no connection with light temperature. You can get a 5000K cool white lamp with CRI95.
  • Focusing only on Kelvin value and ignoring CRI for display projects. The light tone may look good, but products appear faded.
  • Writing wrong parameters on RFQ sheets and getting samples that do not match project requirements.

Quick Checklist Before Sending RFQ

1.Confirm what atmosphere you need: select CCT value first.

2.Check whether color accuracy matters for the end application, set the minimum CRI requirement.

3.Ask suppliers to mark both CCT and CRI clearly on quotation and sample test reports.

4.Require lab test data if the project has strict color requirements.

Conclusion

CCT controls the visual tone of light, while CRI controls color fidelity. They are independent but equally important for commercial lighting design. Clarify both parameters in your RFQ, so your LED supplier can deliver lamps that fit the project expectation without unnecessary delays or rework.

Quality Control

Quality is the way of survival for each enterprise, we have to spare no efforts to make high-quality products to meet or exceed the expectations of customers, that is very crucial to maintain customer relationships and compete with others in the industry.....
