How to Match Dimming Signal and Power Supply for Magnetic Track Lighting
If you are sourcing magnetic track lighting for hotel, retail or office fit-outs, one of the most frequent site issues is poor dimming performance. Lights flicker, cannot dim all the way down, or the control system simply does not talk to the power supply. Most of these problems come from a simple mistake: mismatched dimming signal and LED power supply.
Many buyers only check voltage and wattage, and overlook the dimming protocol. A 48V magnetic track power supply will not work correctly just because the voltage fits. The dimming signal must be supported by the driver, and the whole system needs to be wired correctly.
Common dimming types for 48V magnetic track systems
0-10V / 1-10V dimming
This is the most widely used analogue dimming solution for commercial projects. It is stable, low cost and compatible with most lighting control panels used in offices and supermarkets. The power supply must have dedicated 0-10V signal wires. Standard constant voltage drivers without signal terminals cannot do 0-10V dimming. Important note: 0-10V only controls brightness. It does not support colour tuning or grouping without extra controllers.
DALI dimming
DALI is the top pick for high-end commercial projects, including luxury hotels, galleries and flagship retail stores. It is digital, addressable, and allows individual or grouped control of each light module on the same magnetic track. You need a DALI-certified 48V power supply. Ordinary 0-10V drivers cannot receive DALI commands. One big advantage for installers: DALI wiring runs separately from power lines, so signal quality stays reliable over long track runs.
Triac / phase-cut dimming
Triac dimming is usually for simpler retrofit jobs, where customers use existing wall dimmer switches. It has a clear limitation for magnetic track: most 48V constant voltage magnetic drivers are NOT Triac compatible. If the client insists on Triac control, we need to supply a special Triac-rated driver, and the total load must stay within the dimmer’s range. Flicker is very common if the load is too light.
Zigbee dimming
Zigbee is popular for smart home, boutique shops and small hotel zones. It works wirelessly, paired with smart hubs, phones or wall panels. Two ways to build this system:
1.Zigbee built-in power supply for the magnetic track
2.Standard CV power supply + external Zigbee signal converter Buyers should confirm the hub platform in advance, because some Zigbee devices only work with specific gateways.
Practical matching rules you can send directly to your site team
1.Confirm the control system first, before ordering power supplies and tracks. Do not pick drivers based only on wattage.
2.One dimming type per track loop. Do not mix DALI and 0-10V on the same power output.
3.Calculate total load with a safe margin. Keep the total connected wattage below 85% of the driver rated power.
4.Check flicker requirement. Gallery and showroom projects usually need high flicker-free drivers, even if the dimming signal is correct.
5.Ask for test sample before bulk shipment. Dimming compatibility is best verified on bench, not at site after installation.
Typical mistakes we see from project buyers
- Ordering standard CV power supply and expecting DALI dimming
- Using a DALI controller with non-DALI drivers
- Overloading the driver with too many spotlights and linear modules
- Mixing different dimming protocols on one track circuit
- Ignoring minimum load requirement for Triac dimmers
RFQ checklist for your next magnetic track lighting order
✅ Dimming protocol: DALI / 0-10V / Triac / Zigbee ✅ Input voltage ✅ Output 48V DC rated wattage ✅ Flicker free requirement ✅ Certificate needed (CE, EMC etc.) ✅ Quantity of tracks and light modules for load calculation ✅ Whether signal cables are included
FAQ
Q: Can I change the dimming type after installing the magnetic track?
A: The track itself stays the same. You only need to replace the power supply and control parts, but wiring may need adjustment.
Q: Which one is better for hotel corridors?
A: DALI is preferred for large hotel projects, while 0-10V works well for simpler budget fit-outs.
Q: Does Zigbee signal drop out on long magnetic tracks?
A: Zigbee wireless signal is separate from track power. Track length affects the power load, not the wireless signal range.
