How to Combine Different Magnetic Modules in One 48V Track System
Many lighting designers and buyers know magnetic track systems support many different modules, but they struggle to arrange them reasonably. Simply stacking spotlights often leads to overly bright hotspots, uncomfortable glare or uneven ambient light. This guide explains how to combine spot, flood, grille and pendant modules together to build a balanced lighting scheme for shops, galleries and brand showrooms.
What each module is designed for
Before layout planning, it is important to clarify the function of every module. They cannot replace each other.
- Spot module: The highlighting unit. It creates sharp light pools for products, artworks, wall displays. Select narrow beam angles for single items, medium angles for shelf displays.
- Flood module: For basic ambient lighting. It provides soft, wide-spread light to lift the overall brightness and fill dark gaps between spotlight zones.
- Grille linear module: Low-glare linear lighting. The internal honeycomb grille suppresses direct glare. It works well for long corridors, checkout counters and areas where people look upwards frequently.
- Pendant module: Atmosphere and focal accent. The hanging cylindrical lights are widely used over bar counters, jewellery display islands and dining zones. It adds layering to the whole lighting scene.
Practical layout matching rules
There is no fixed formula, but these proven combinations work for most commercial projects.
- Standard retail shop layout: Flood modules evenly distributed along the track as base lighting + spot modules aimed at shelf products. Add grille modules along walkways to reduce glare for customers and staff.
- Gallery or exhibition wall layout: Mainly spotlights for exhibits. Use a small number of grille modules instead of flood lights, to keep the background dim and let artworks stand out.
- Bar counter / jewellery island layout: Pendant lights above the counter as the visual focus. Match a few low-power spot modules on surrounding display shelves. Do not put too many high-brightness units in this small zone.
Keep one core principle: separate functional lighting and accent lighting. Do not use spotlights to do the job of ambient lighting.
Power & wiring calculation when mixing multiple module types
All modules share the same 48V constant voltage track, so you need to sum up all wattages carefully.
- Add the rated power of every spot, flood, grille and pendant module on one power feed.
- Reserve at least 20% power margin for the driver. Never run the driver at full continuous load.
- For long tracks with many pendant modules: pendant units are often concentrated on one section, which increases local current. Split into multiple feeding points if the total length is long, to avoid voltage drop and dim light at the track tail.
- If you use dimming function: confirm all modules on the same track support the same dimming protocol, whether it is DALI, 0-10V or Zigbee. Mixed dimmable and non-dimmable modules on one circuit will cause flickering.
Common mistakes when mixing magnetic modules
- Too many spot modules, no flood or grille modules. The space has isolated bright spots and large dark areas, the overall visual effect is fragmented.
- Overloading pendant modules on a single power zone. Besides power risk, too many hanging lights also look messy instead of premium.
- Ignoring glare from dense spotlights in walk areas. Visitors feel eye fatigue after staying a short time.
- Mixing modules from different magnetic series by mistake. S20, ultra-narrow 4.5mm and curved track modules are not compatible. They cannot clip onto the same track profile.
- CCT inconsistency across different module types. If spot, grille and pendant lights have different colour temperature binning, the space shows obvious colour difference.
RFQ checklist for mixed-module magnetic track project
- Magnetic track series (S20 / 4.5mm narrow or other)
- Quantity of each module: spot / flood / grille linear / pendant
- Wattage, beam angle for spot modules
- CRI requirement and unified CCT bin request
- Dimming type for the whole system
- Total track length, feeding point quantity
- Certification required for target market
- Packing and marking requirement
- Lead time
FAQ
Q: Can I put all four module types on one single driver? A: Yes, only if the total power stays within 80% of the driver rated capacity, and all modules share the same dimming standard. Q: Do pendant lights have extra limits besides power? A: Yes. Check the track structure load limit. Do not hang excessive heavy pendant units, to prevent track deformation after long-term use. Q: Is it necessary to use flood modules in every project? A: No. For art galleries, low ambient brightness is required. You can use only spot and grille modules to keep a dark background.
