Why 48V Magnetic Track Light Flickers After Installation & How to Fix It
If you just finished installing a 48V magnetic track lighting system, only to find the lights flickering randomly, you are not alone. This is one of the most frequent complaints we receive from contractors, interior designers and project buyers. Flickering does not always mean the lamp itself is defective. Most issues come from mismatched parts, wiring mistakes or improper power setup.
1. Mismatched dimmer and driver combination
This is the top cause. Many buyers pick separate dimmers, power supplies and magnetic modules from different suppliers without checking compatibility. A 0-10V dimmer cannot work well with a DALI-only power supply. Triac dimmers are not designed for low-voltage 48V constant voltage systems. Even if every single part works on its own, they will produce unstable signal and cause visible flicker.
2. Overloaded or underrated 48V power supply
Each 48V magnetic power unit has a maximum output wattage. If you add too many spotlights, linear lights and accessories on one power supply, it will run beyond its rated load. The output voltage drops constantly, and lights start to blink. A less noticed case: leaving the power supply running at nearly full load for long hours. Overheating triggers built-in protection and leads to intermittent flicker.
3. Voltage drop on long track runs
48V is low voltage. When your magnetic track is very long, thin wiring or poor contact between track joints creates voltage loss. The end of the track gets lower voltage than the start. Lights far from the power feed point flicker or become dimmer. This often happens on large retail shops, open office and showroom projects.
4. Poor contact between modules and track busbar
Magnetic lights rely on spring contact pins to touch the copper strip inside the track.
- Dust, paint residue or oxidation on the copper bar
- Bent, loose contact pins on the light module
- Misaligned track joints where copper strips do not line up perfectly All these will create unstable connection. Flicker comes and goes when you slightly touch or shake the fixture.
5. Grounding and interference problem
Some building sites have unstable earth or messy wiring next to lighting cables. Nearby high-power equipment, inverter or motor can create electromagnetic interference. The noise disturbs the low-voltage signal and causes random flicker, especially when dimming is turned on.
6. Defective individual module
If only one single light flickers while all others run stable, the problem is isolated to that fixture. Its internal PCB or LED chip may be faulty. Swap it with a known good module to confirm quickly.
Quick troubleshooting checklist for your site
- Confirm dimmer protocol matches the power supply (DALI / 0-10V / PWM)
- Add up total wattage of all modules, keep 20% spare capacity on power supply
- Split long tracks into multiple power feeds to reduce voltage drop
- Wipe copper busbar, check every contact pin and track joint
- Separate low-voltage lighting cables from high-power wiring
- Isolate flickering units one by one to rule out faulty lamps
What to tell your supplier when sending RFQ
When you report flicker issues to your lighting supplier, prepare these details to speed up support:
- Total track length
- Number and wattage of each magnetic module
- Dimming type you use
- Photo or short video showing the flicker
- Whether all lights flicker or only part of them
FAQ
Q: Can I stop flicker just by replacing the lights? A: Not usually. If the root cause is power or signal mismatch, new lights will still flicker.
Q: Is flicker dangerous for 48V magnetic track? A: 48V is safe low voltage, but long-term flicker can damage LED modules and power supplies over time. It also creates uncomfortable lighting for visitors and staff.
Q: Should I use one big power supply for the whole track? A: For long runs, multiple smaller power feeds are a better solution than one large supply. It reduces voltage drop risk.
