5 Common Causes of LED Track Light Overheating & Effective Solutions for Wholesale Projects
Overheating is one of the top after-sales complaints for LED track lights in long-running commercial projects. Continuous high temperature will lead to light decay, driver burnout, plastic shell yellowing and even safety risks for store lighting. Most overheating problems are not caused by defective LED chips, but relate to heat sink structure, power matching, track load and on-site installation. 1. Insufficient Aluminum Heat Sink Structure
The aluminum housing of track light is the main heat dissipation carrier. Low-cost thin-walled extruded aluminum cannot quickly export heat generated by COB chips during long-time operation, resulting in rapid temperature rise of the lamp body.
Solution: Choose track lights with thickened integrated aluminum cylindrical housing and hollow heat dissipation grooves on the side. Our track lamp adopts die-casting and extruded double heat dissipation structure to expand the heat exchange area, greatly lowering working temperature for 24/7 non-stop store operation.
2. Mismatched Constant Current Driver & Overloaded Power
If the internal driver is configured with insufficient rated power, it will run under full load for a long time and generate massive heat. Some suppliers use generic universal drivers to cut costs, which have poor temperature resistance and are easy to overheat and burn out within several months.
Solution: Each wattage of track light is equipped with a dedicated constant current driver with sufficient margin. Remind your installation team never to replace the original driver with cheap third-party accessories on site.
3. Excessive Lamps Loaded on One Single Track Rail
Every 2-wire, 3-wire or 4-wire aluminum track rail has a maximum safe load current. Too many high-power 20W/30W track heads connected on one track will cause the conductive copper bar to heat up, and transfer heat to each lamp head indirectly.
Solution: Control the quantity reasonably according to track wire specification. For 3-meter full-length track, we suggest no more than 8pcs 20W lamps on a single power feed loop, and set up separate power input for long-distance multi-lamp layout.
4. Poor Installation Ventilation Environment
When track lights are installed too close to gypsum board, wooden decorative panels or enclosed ceiling boxes, hot air cannot circulate freely around the lamp body. Closed narrow space accumulates heat continuously and accelerates aging.
Solution: Reserve at least 5cm clearance space above and around each track head for air convection. Avoid embedding track lights inside fully sealed ceiling cavities without heat dissipation gaps.
5. Long-term Working In High Ambient Temperature Space
Kitchen retail counters, hot pot restaurants, supermarkets with poor air conditioning and indoor exhibition halls with crowded crowds have high ambient temperature all year round. The ambient temperature superimposes the working heat of the lamp itself, exceeding the LED operating temperature threshold.
Solution: Upgrade to high-temperature resistant customized drivers and increase one level of heat sink thickness for special hot environments. Reduce single lamp wattage properly to lower heat output per unit.

1.Regularly clean dust on the heat sink surface every 6 months, dust blockage seriously hinders heat dissipation;
2.Unified batch model and driver specification for the whole project to avoid inconsistent heat performance;
3.Test the surface temperature of lamp body before project handover to end customers, eliminate hidden dangers in advance.
