What is SDCM in LED Lighting? Why Color Consistency Matters For Commercial Projects

Views: 12    Posted Date: September 10,2026

When you source LED lights in bulk for hotel, retail or office projects, one common complaint from installers and designers is inconsistent light colour. Some fixtures look slightly warmer, while others appear cooler even with the same 3000K or 4000K CCT. This colour difference is measured by SDCM, a key specification many buyers skip when sending RFQ.

SDCM stands for Standard Deviation of Colour Matching. It describes how much colour variation exists between individual LED lights within one batch. The lower the SDCM value, the more uniform the colour output across all lamps.

Most factories produce LED products at SDCM ≤5 as the standard level. High-grade commercial and luxury projects require SDCM ≤3, with much tighter colour tolerance.

SDCM levels and application scenarios

  • SDCM ≤5: General commercial use, offices, warehouses, ordinary shops. Visible colour difference only if lamps are placed side by side and observed carefully. This is the standard bulk supply level for most lighting orders.
  • SDCM ≤3: Premium grade for boutiques, jewellery shops, hotel lobbies, museum lighting. Human eyes can barely detect colour difference between different lights. This is widely requested in high-end tender documents.
  • SDCM ≤2: Ultra strict colour consistency, used for art galleries, fashion flagship stores, display windows. Higher cost and stricter bin selection during LED chip production.

Why SDCM cannot be ignored for bulk lighting projects

For large renovation projects, hundreds or thousands of lights are installed across the same space. If you select fixtures with SDCM 5 or higher, adjacent lamps will show slight colour shift after installation. The whole space looks patchy, and this defect is hard to fix once all lights are mounted on ceiling.

This problem cannot be solved after delivery. Colour deviation comes from LED chip bin sorting at the factory. Once production is finished, you cannot adjust the colour by simply dimming the lights. Reinstalling or replacing thousands of lamps will cause huge delays and extra costs for contractors.

Common misunderstandings about SDCM

1.Same CCT does not mean same colour Two lights marked 4000K may still look different if their SDCM rating is high. CCT only tells the nominal colour temperature, while SDCM controls batch-to-batch consistency.

2.SDCM will not stay forever LED chips will shift colour after long hours of operation. Good quality LED packages maintain stable SDCM performance over their lifespan. Cheap low-grade LEDs suffer bigger colour drift after thousands of working hours.

3.SDCM testing report is necessary for tender For bidding projects, designers often require suppliers to provide LM-80 or photometric reports showing SDCM data. Verbal promises of “good colour” are not enough for formal tender evaluation.

Practical buying tips for your lighting RFQ

Clearly write the SDCM requirement in your RFQ document before quotation. Confirm whether the factory can maintain the same SDCM level for the whole batch. If your client is doing high-end retail or hotel fit-out, specify SDCM ≤3 instead of accepting default SDCM ≤5.

Also, ask the supplier how they sort LED bins. Factories with strict bin selection will separate LED chips carefully to keep colour variation low, which is the core guarantee for stable SDCM performance.

When comparing multiple quotations, do not only focus on unit price. Two suppliers may quote similar price, but one only offers SDCM 5 while another can deliver SDCM 3. The gap will directly affect the final on-site lighting effect and client satisfaction.
