What is L70 and L80 in LED Lighting? A Guide for Commercial Lighting Buyers

Views: 6    Posted Date: September 21,2026

When sourcing LED lights for commercial or architectural projects, most buyers quickly notice the “50,000 hours” lifespan printed on datasheets. However, many overlook the critical terms L70 and L80, which determine the real usable life of your LED fixtures. Ignoring lumen maintenance standards often leads to unexpected brightness drop, project complaints and rework costs.

What Are L70 and L80?

L70 and L80 are lumen maintenance standards, measuring how long it takes for LED light output to decline to a percentage of its initial brightness.

  • L70: The time when the LED’s luminous flux drops to 70% of the original brightness. This is the widely accepted industry baseline for commercial LED lighting. Once it reaches L70, the light is considered to have reached its useful service life.
  • L80: The time when luminous flux falls to 80% of the initial value. L80 has stricter requirements, commonly used in high-end retail, museum and premium office projects where stable brightness is non-negotiable.

Common Misconceptions

1.50000 hours does NOT mean the LED lamp stops working completely. It usually refers to L70 lumen maintenance. The fixture may still light up, but it will be noticeably dimmer.

2.Chip lifespan ≠ complete fixture lifespan. Many suppliers only quote chip LM-80 data, while the whole lamp’s life is affected by drivers, heat sink and installation temperature.

3.High temperature speeds up brightness decay. Lights installed in hot spaces such as supermarket ceilings or kitchen areas will degrade faster than laboratory test results.

Key Checklist for Purchasers

1.Ask suppliers for official LM-80 test reports instead of only checking marketing datasheets.

2.Match the standard to your project: general commercial projects can use L70; luxury retail and exhibition projects should select L80.

3.Confirm the testing temperature. A 50,000-hour L70 tested at 25℃ will perform worse when mounted in a high-temperature ceiling.

4.Clarify whether the lifetime data applies to LED chip only or the whole assembled luminaire.

Final Tip

Don’t judge LED quality only by the big number of hours on the specification sheet. L70 and L80 tell you the real long-term performance of the lights, which helps you reduce maintenance and replacement costs for your lighting projects.
