IP Rating Explained for LED Lighting: How To Pick Right IP Grade For Different Project Zones
When preparing specification sheets or sending RFQ for lighting projects, IP rating is one parameter you cannot overlook. Many project disputes happen because wrong IP grade fixtures are installed in damp or splash‑prone areas. Buyers only notice the problem after installation, leading to product failure and costly replacement.
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The two‑digit IP code tells how well a luminaire resists solid dust particles and water exposure.

1.Using IP20 indoor track light in covered patio Even though it is under roof, wind‑blown moisture and humidity can creep inside fixtures. Short‑circuit and early failure will occur within months.
2.Over‑specifying IP65 for all indoor rooms High‑IP fixtures cost more. Installing IP65 in normal dry office is unnecessary and wastes project budget. Match IP rating to real environment only.
3.Confusing “suitable for bathroom” marketing text with real IP number Some suppliers claim bathroom‑usable but only offer IP20. Always check official datasheet for printed IP code instead of relying on product description.

1.Classify your project areas before drafting specifications: dry / damp‑splash / fully outdoor. Assign corresponding IP rating for each zone.
2.Write exact IP requirement inside your RFQ document. Do not just tell supplier “for outdoor use”.
